Film for soft fruit - which one should you choose?
Soft fruits such as strawberries, raspberries and blueberries are grown in specially designed light tunnels or under small roofs. Due to their special light requirements and the characteristics of typical greenhouse objects, they require dedicated greenhouse films.
Film requirements for soft fruit:
UV transmission
The critical parameter for a film dedicated to soft fruit is to transmit UV rays as fully as possible (UV-OPEN films), guaranteeing better fruit colouration and fewer problems with yield quality.
We recommend an article introducing these requirements at this link.
Designed to be mounted on ropes
Films for soft fruits should be characterised by increased mechanical strength.
Typical film installation on light greenhouses involves ropes or tapes, which increases loads due to increased tension and friction. Choosing a dedicated product reduces the risk of premature degradation.
Appropriate thickness
For soft fruit crops, we supply materials mostly in thicknesses 140mic, 150mic and 180mic.
Note that an increase in the thickness of the film is not the same as an increase in its lifespan.
You can read more about the relationship between film thickness and film quality in the article at this link.
• 140mic films
The basic thickness for Kritifil film for soft fruit is 140mic.
With Plastika Kritis technology, the material in this thickness meets all the cultivation and rope-mounted greenhouse requirements.
• 150mic films
For customers expecting greater thickness - we offer the material in 150mic, while we believe that a change of 10mic does not benefit these film specifications significantly.
• 180mic films
We offer 180mic and 200-300mic thicknesses on request.
Enhanced diffusivity
Soft fruits are sensitive to overheating, and some varieties are badly affected by excess direct light.
For this reason, it is most often grown under films of medium or high diffusivity.
The choice of the degree of diffusion of the material is very important.
• diffusion 45-50%
Customers who choose early-start cultivation, especially strawberry cultivation, should choose materials with this diffusion level.
• diffusion 60%
Films for customers who are interested in year-round strawberry cultivation (for whom harvest volumes in late spring and summer are essential) and raspberry producers
• diffusion 70%
Films for customers who prefer the highest diffusivity. Be aware of the already significantly increasing risk of delayed start.
• diffusion 70-90%
Considering the changing requirements and the observed substantial delay in crop start in years with severe light deficits in the spring, Geo Polska has stopped the sale of films with diffusivities above 70% (including UHD films with 90% diffusion).
These materials are available by special order only.
